Bali is a volcanic island and is part of the group of islands that forms the Indonesian
Republic. It is situated just east of the Isle of Java, separated by
the Straight of Bali. Approximately 3 million people live on the
island. The Balinese people strongly differentiate themselves with
the rest of the Indonesian population because of their Hindu
tradition and rich artistic heritage.
The village forms the core in Balinese society. These religious
communities are very close knit and all villagers without exception
are expected to take part in all temple-and/or funeral ceremonies.
Religious customs include music, theater, and elaborate food offerings.
The way a village is built is typical for social ladder here. So will you find
the main temples, main municipal buildings and the market right in the center.
The rest is more or less built around this center.
Bali primarily used to grow rice but since the government introduced
more diversification you will now also find coffee plantations,
miscellaneous citrus trees, grapes, vanilla, cloves and tobacco. Tourism
is a main source of income for the Balinese people and rest assured that they will bend over backwards to make you
right at home on this what many call Paradise on earth.
